  • City Council Considering Slashing PD Trainging Budget in 2017
    Posted On: Sep 15, 2016

The DPOA has received word that the Denton City Council has been considering cutting the Police Department's training budget by $10,000 in 2017 to just $21,000.

Based on the number of employees of the department, both sworn and support staff, that figure allows for less than $100 per employee for training over the next year. For perspective, the training budget in 2008 was approximately $98,000. The amount originally presented for budget consideration was $31,000.

It is the position of the Association that high-quality and continuous training is an absolute necessity for employees of the Police Department and their mission to provide unsurpassed service to the citizens and visitors of Denton. In these times of increased scrutiny of policing activities, we cannot afford to have the training budget reduced so drastically. The stakes are too high.

The Department provides some training classes in-house, but many specialty courses are provided by outside providers, often at locations that require travel and lodging. Additionally, the supplies needed for the in-house training are paid for largely out of the training budget.

The council will vote on the 2017-2018 budget on September 20th. If you agree that the training budget should not be cut, please let your council member know.
